Not Supposed To Be Here: A Review

Never in the history of the world has the cry of one child for his mother been heard on every continent, nor caused a movement equally as widespread, until George Floyd's strangled 'mama' latched on the ears of the world and refused to let go. The protests have been powerful. The experience, epic. But conversations, clashing. Then this short film by Katung Aduwak and Jojo Silla, titled 'Not Supposed To Be Here' comes along with a ribbon and ties everything up into an interesting bouquet of ideas. Our timelines have been full of them: should we be trending #BlackLivesMatter vs #AllLivesMatter? Is Donald Trump's presence in the White House enabling racial violence?  Should white people be begging for forgiveness for slavery? Isn't violence during protests a reaffirmation of racial stereotypes? Isn't hating white people racism too? Katung and Jojo take the ideas underscoring these conversations and make them grow on the screen through animation and compell...

JOHN WICK: 3 IMPORTANT LESSONS (II)

(7 minute read) The first lesson the thrilling John Wick taught me, was that my choices could make me a slave to my passions; and to be  a slave to one's passions, is to step down from the pedestal of 'humanity' into the abyss of 'animality'--if that's even a real word. I've made you wait long enough. I hope you haven't lost interest yet, because the two other lessons are equally as important as the first. Here they are: 2) No Freedom, No Peace:   I once read a magnificent article about 'beauty', and one of the quotes that have stuck with me from that article are these words: peace is the innate nature of man . I hope these words just struck you the way they struck me. I found them powerful, attractive but elusive. I didn't understand how peace was connected to the nature of man, until I watched John Wick. John is a character that will eternally desire peace--us too; and for a time, he had it, with his wife. But the moment h...

John Wick: 3 Important Lessons

(7 minute read) John Wick is a sensational action block buster about a veteran assassin who is drawn back into the underworld by a desire for revenge. This revenge was directed at a fool of a boy, Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen), who out of idiotic youthful exuberance breaks into John's house with an accomplice, steals his car, and beats him up. All these could have been easily forgiven but for the final and most spiteful act: he killed John's dog in cold blood, with a single shot. Pause. Kindly observe a minute of silence for daisy the dog. It was the post-mortem gift of Jack's wife, Helen, to him. It was the last link he had to the woman he had done everything for.She was the reason he had to do the impossible to leave the underworld. And just like that, with one insolent move of a finger, Daisy was gone. If I were a person of great influence, I would MANDATE that you and every other human being on earth and in space (especially those studying Anthropology, Psycho...
