John Wick: 3 Important Lessons

(7 minute read)
John Wick is a sensational action block buster about a veteran assassin who is drawn back into the underworld by a desire for revenge. This revenge was directed at a fool of a boy, Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen), who out of idiotic youthful exuberance breaks into John's house with an accomplice, steals his car, and beats him up.

All these could have been easily forgiven but for the final and most spiteful act: he killed John's dog in cold blood, with a single shot.

Pause.

Kindly observe a minute of silence for daisy the dog.

It was the post-mortem gift of Jack's wife, Helen, to him. It was the last link he had to the woman he had done everything for.She was the reason he had to do the impossible to leave the underworld. And just like that, with one insolent move of a finger, Daisy was gone.

If I were a person of great influence, I would MANDATE that you and every other human being on earth and in space (especially those studying Anthropology, Psychology and Philosophy), watch John Wick . This is not just I think the plot, stunts and action are lit, but because I think John Wick (played by Keeanu Reeves) has 3 fundamental things to teach us all.

Have I got your attention yet? Let's go then. Just keep an open mind would you?

1) Life offers us just one choice

We are all animals. You, me and Chandi the dancing dog. We share something in common that other life forms like plants don't, we have five senses; thus we live a 'sensitive' life in which our action and reaction to stimuli aid or mar our survival. But you and I have two more things that Chandi does not: Intellect and will ; and so we live an 'intellective life' where we reason and choose.

Let me ask you a question:do you know what makes an addict, an addict?

A choice. A choice to live a life where stimuli dominates reason.

Do you feel like Gulder right now? Sure! Take a sip. Tastes great doesn't it? Down a gulp. You might like it so much that you feel like Gulder in the morning, at noon, at work, in the market, but what the heck? You feel like Gulder so just drink it! Ahbi persin hol you?

The heck is that you are becoming unreasonable. Your desire for Gulder is dominating you, and so even though you know you shouldn't be drinking at work, you're downing a glass anyway. A couple more steps in this direction and it'll take you down a notch. Just like a rat smells fish and can't resist, you'll see Gulder and won't resist. It pulls you into living an animal life.

You're probably wondering how I got all this from a movie about a man who once killed three men with a pencil. Well, move your eyes  a little closer to  the screen and try not to miss a word.

When our aforementioned fool got home, his father welcomed him with a clean punch in the gut (it was so beautiful to watch 😍). Viggo Tarasov (played by Micheal Nyqvist) lifts a phone to his ear and dials John's number. Here's their conversation, complete with my reactions:

Virgo:  Hello, John. I heard about your wife... I'm sorry (Me: super story! 😒). My condolences. It's, uh, seemed to be fate, or happenstance, or just bad f***in' luck that caused our paths to cross once again (Me: dey blow English for there mtcheew 🙄).
John: (silence)
Me: Ghen ghen! 🤓
Viggo: Let us not resort to our baser instincts and handle this like civilized men to move on... [John hangs up mid-sentence; Viggo puts down his phone in a resigned manner]
When Iosef, who was in the same room asks his father what John said, the reply was 'ENOUGH'.

The scene just before this one was a delicious display of muscle. John breaks the basement floor to unearth the arsenal fit for a distinguished assassin; just in case anyone was doubtful.

Do you understand now? Okay, let me help a bit more.

It had taken John Wick the brains and braun to bring down an entire family of assassins and leave the 'industry', so that he could enjoy peace with his wife. Now, everything he had done, the people he had killed, the pains it had taken was reduced to dust because his passion, those 'base instincts' overcame reason. John the human was gone. Baba Yaga the kill-monster, reborn. With one choice, he lost it all.

One choice. No one said it would be an easy one. Just one choice. John decided to kill the fool at all cost; yes, even if it cost over a hundred other lives--which it did.

My dear, which  would YOU choose: to be controlled by stimuli or live by reason?

I hope you enjoyed it! The French and Igbo versions of this are now available.

The Joker: We're Laughing Our Way to Death

Joaquinn Phoenix stars as The Joker (2019) If you haven't heard about The Joker, then let me be the first to welcome you back from the bottom of the ocean. The Joker is a thrilling thought-provoking theatrical typhoon of a movie. It's the story of Arthur Fleck, a mentally troubled man oppressed by the disregard, and even contempt, of Gotham City (America) towards 'nobody's' like him. One of his mental illnesses makes him laugh uncontrollably at inappropriate times. Arthur tries to turn this lemon into lemonade by making it as a professional clown. But he ends up being treated like a social clown; he becomes the comedian that everyone thinks is a joke. Then he decided to switch things up. He chose to deliver a punchline so funny, that only he would understand; for the first time the joke would be on society. And this was it (video below *viewer discretion is advised*) The scene is a jolter isn't it? Joaquinn Phoenix surely earned his Oscar! (...

#EndSars: The Message You Deserve

Dear Nigerians, Taking a cue from the new 'he-who-shall-not-be-named', I would like to begin this open letter to you all by saying that it has become necessary for you to receive the message you deserve, for your hearts to be soothed, and your hope restored. The events of the past two weeks that culminated in the #LagosMassacre, especially at Lekki toll gate have been met with varied reactions: grief and despair by those who understood the essence of the #EndSars movement, but smug indifference and victim-blaming by those who did not care for the disruption of their routine. Firstly, let it be known that in the history of this millennium there has been no movement of such magnitude initiated, managed, and peacefully maintained by a decentralized online mobilization of youth, aside from ours. When else has it occurred that over a thousand young people trekked 32km--nearly thrice the length of the longest bridge in Africa--to Akwuzu in honor of all the young people whose promisin...

Black Girl Power: Riding to War but not to Victory?

Nothing steams a modern woman's buns like the mention of patriarchy. Any conversation leaning towards its favor could end in honest chants of 'who run the world? Girls!' .  Female power is a wonderful thing. It has done a daunting amount of global good, but there are sometimes when a critical mind is drawn to wonder if women aren't turning into the monsters they are trying to topple.  Especially when the focus is black women. Recently, Renee Donaldson, a black Youtuber, and social influencer apologized to her followers for promoting a brand called Clinichub .  Clinichub is a business that acts as a middle man between plastic surgery clinics in Istanbul, Turkey, and potential clients around the world.  What is interesting about this business is how it specifically targets black women and uses influencers like Renee to lure them under the knife. Well, Renee apologized to her fans after her 'Brazilian butt lift' surgery went south, leaving her with lumps. And fro...
